(Image courtesy of: The Photo Archive of the Hungarian National Tourist Office)This area of Buda is a part of the Budapest World Heritage site and when you visit it you will see why. Though the whole area was reduced to rubble during WWII, it has been loving and carefully restored to its previous glory making sure all the old architectural styles have been incorporated, including Baroque, Gothic, Medieval and even its Ottoman era. The original castle built on this site was built in the mid 13th century and since then there have been various castles of various styles built throughout the ages.
The most culturally significant building in this district is Buda Castle itself, it was used as the last stronghold of Nazism in Budapest against the approaching Soviet forces. The building was destroyed in that conflict and was rebuilt like the rest of the castle district since that terrible time. The district also includes some noteworthy 19th century buildings as well.
