This little attraction is actually a church built in a cave! It is situated on the southern slope of Gellert Hill and was founded and consecrated by an order of monks, the Pauline Fathers, in 1926. As well as a church and a monastery the chapel served as a field hospital during WWII. The Gellert Hill Cave Chapel served until 1951 when the Soviet forces raided the chapel and sealed the entrance. It was reopened after the Iron Curtain feel in 1989 and has been home to the Pauline order since 1992 but today is a popular tourist attraction. The chapel is closed to the public during mass times, but it is well worth the trek uphill to see its impressive but peaceful interior.
