This is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world, only preceded by the Temple Emanu-El of New York. Capable of holding up to a 3000 large worshippers, the synagogue is 75 metres long and over 25 metres wide. It was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Byzantine/Moorish style and was restored for 1996 after its desecration by the Nazis during WWII. Services are held regularly but not during the winter months as the interior is too huge to heat.

When the Nazis marched into Budapest up to 20,000 Jews sought sanctuary in the synagogue but 7,000 didn’t survive the winter. They are now buried on the grounds and the National Jewish Museum is also on the grounds of the synagogue.
