Freedom Square,or Szabadság tér as its known to the locals, just has to be seen when you come to Budapest.

The square, which was once was a barracks, was but was destroyed in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1848 and 1849, many Hungarian Freedom Fighter’s died here, hence the name, Freedom Square.

In the center of the square you will find the only remaining monument (the Obelisk) associated to the Soviets. This tall obelisk is very large and there is a giant star on the top of it. This is a symbol of the troops who set Budapest free in World War II.

Along with the obelisk, there are many other charming buildings that tourists like to see. These buildings include Ignác Alpár’s Exchange building, which is situated to the west of the square and the Hungarian National Bank, is on its left. Just behind the square you’ll find the US Embassy Building, which was built in 1900. It is said that Jewish refugees used to hide in the lower floors of this building.

So much history surrounds this great square.
