Budapest is home to one of the most powerful museums in Europe. This museum was once the headquarters of the Hungarian Nazis and was later taken over by the communist secret police of the Soviet troops. The House of Terror, which is located on Andrássy Street, is a poignant tribute to all the people who were captured, tortured and killed in this building. Opened in 2002, this museum focuses on the two dictatorial regimes that occupied Hungary for much of the 20th century, including Fascism and especially Communism, under the Soviet Union.
The tours start on the top floors and they it gets progressively darker as you make you way to the basement and the cells. All the exhibits are presented in Hungarian but there are extensive information sheets available that present the in both English and German.
