The site of the Matthias Church has been home to churches since the 13th century, it survived as a place of Christian worship even during the occupation of the Turks who had converted many churches into mosques. As with many of the old buildings in Budapest, the church was destroyed during the war but was rebuilt and a section of the southern side of the Church was originally part of the 14th century Gothic Church.

The church, officially the Church of Our Lady, has also served as the site of coronation of the last two kings of Hungary. Today visitors can explore the Ecclesiastical Art Museum which begins in the medieval crypt and leads up to Saint Stephen’s Chapel.
