Built on the southern tip of Castle Hill in what is now called the Castle District, Buda Castle has been home to the kings of Budapest throughout the centuries. During this time it has besieged at least 31 times and has been destroyed a number of times as well but each time it has been rebuilt including after its destruction during the final days of WWII.

After the war the entire castle was rebuilt with modern interiors as well as including the hidden walls and medieval structures that had remained over the centuries. There are still several sites on the grounds that are being excavated and include some of the ruins of the various incarnations of the building from the past. The castle now hosts several museums including the Historical Museum of Budapest and the Hungarian National Gallery.
