Although not officially a basilica, since the Pope has not given it that honour, this is merely called a ‘Basilica’ because of its size. It is the largest church in Hungary and took over 50 years to build! The church was considered so sturdy and strong, that all the documents and artworks were stored there during the WWI bombings.

It was constructed in the shape of a Greek Cross, it is capable of holding up to 8,500 people inside its vaulted nave and the signature domes make this the most visible structure in the city. The Basilica is the tallest building in Budapest at 96 metres, along with the Parliament Building which was also built to the same height just a year before.

Take the elevator or the 364 steps to the top of the left tower for panoramic 360° views of the city, or visit the chapel behind the sanctuary, where the mummified right hand of Saint Stephen, first king of Hungary, is kept.
